Front Porch Critters

American Toad
A Green Lacewing
Marbeled Spider
Notes: The new light on the front porch attracts more than just bugs and spiders. Those who prey on them are showing up as well, as the toad picture above shows.

The Green Lacewing is another member of the Neuroptera, related to the Fishfly and Brown Lacewing from the fifteenth.

The Marbled spiders are by far the most numerous of the predators the light has attracted, though like many orb weavers their vision is piss-poor. I returned the male Regal Jumping Spider to his post just above the door after I photographed him, and he's eaten at least two that bumbled into him on their way to a web.

fantastic! such a beauty of animals und you have much patient! Tue 18-May-2004 07:48

One may tell the sex of the Regal Jumping Spiders by their color. Males are dark, females are not. I caught the male on the front porch last night while he was stalking green leafhoppers. The female I found hibernating in a bluebird box last December. You can read about her here--http://silflayhraka.com/archives/003298.html

The iridescent green things are chelicerae, aka "Fang sheaths."

The male was much harder to get a decent photo of--he's just too damn dark. The three above are the best of the 60 or so I shot.

Notes:

The Harnessed Tiger Moth is not the same species as the still-unidentifed Tiger Moth from 05/14.

The Chauliodes Rastricornisis a type of Fishfly, a member of the Neuroptera Insect order, related to the Brown Lacewing in the first picture.
