Green Tree Frog
Green Tree Frog II
It's Not Easy, Being Green
View all 5 photos...
Notes:

The Green Tree Frog is a little further west than he should be--the species prefers the swamps of the Coastal Plain, not the front porches of the Piedmont. I'm assuming he wandered up from the bottomland out back. Ngnat liked him a great deal, until he jumped on her.

Seen From above, or the side or back for that matter, the Fall Webworm Moth is a pure white, and so almost impossible for me to photgraph worth a damn. I like the head shot, though. New Zealand is scared to death of them--http://www.maf.govt.nz/biosecurity/pests-diseases/forests/fall-webworm/fact-sheet.htm

I've always thought June Beetles were green, but that is a particular species of June Beetle. The disticntion between it and a Shining Leaf Chafer is due to the claw-like structure at the end of the hind leg, and I didn't get a decent enough angle on the beetle to tell for sure.

what is the white one? what do you shoot with for your lens??? cool! Fri 28-May-2004 03:29

The camera is nothing special--a Sony Digital Mavica with a 10x zoom. It's got to be braced to get the fine details on the insects to show Fri 28-May-2004 03:51

Notes:

There are some much nicer pictures of a Rosy Maple Moth here--http://booksandnature.homestead.com/Moth20.html

Ngnat was fascinated by the spider. She was really quite upset when I said we couldn't keep her.

Hey your front porch looks very interesting Mon 24-May-2004 02:40

Damselfly: Blue-Tipped Dancer
Crane Fly
Pink Striped Oakworm Moth
View all 7 photos...
Notes:

The shot of the Damselfly would have been impossible had it not entangled its tail in a remnant of spiderweb. It had basically given up by the time I arrived, and so stayed still long enough for me to take its picture. Never would have been possible, otherwise. I freed it, afterwards

Look closely at the white moth and you can see what I think is evidence of a visit by an Ichneumon wasp, though whether it was by a member of the species in yesterday's series I have no idea. The Ichneumon wasps parasitize moths, among other insects, by laying their eggs in them--like Alien. When the eggs hatch, the Ichneumon larvae eat their way out, killing the host in the process. I think that's what the hole in the fur is, but short of keeping the moth until it dies, I've no way of finding out.

The close-up of the Pink Striped oakworm moth reminds me of a buffalo. I think it's the shoulder-heavy posture

Cranefly 1
Ichneumon wasp
Marbled Spider 1
View all 6 photos...
Notes: I got lucky with the cranefly. It lit on my hand and I was able to get two shots in before it realized its mistake and flew off. I'm wondering if eye color is a sex characteristic in the cranefly family--I'd swear the earlier shot of the maiting pair shows one with red eyes

The best of the 6 or so Ichneumon wasp photos is above. She's cleaning her antennae.

Both Marbled Spider photos are of the same individual--the wrapped up carcasses beside her are green leafhoppers, ubiquitous on the front porch but far too small and lively for my current setup to photograph well.

The Southern Lady Beetle, despite her name, is an introduced species from China. Thousands of them invade our house each fall. Not a greatshot, but her shell appears almost wet it's so shiny

Injuries

Tough Guy
Scotty got his shiner when he pulled a dining room chair over on top of himself. There was a nice bruise above and below his eye afterwards, but all that's left now is the little scab below. It wasn't that bad an accident--he stopped crying in about five minutes
