Grapeleaf Skeletonizer

Notes: I would not normally expect to be able to get so close to a wasp, but this one appeared to be more intent on sunning herself than in hunting, those she did occasionally stick her head in a crack in case a spider happened to have taken shelter there.
I know it's a female because of that. Males don't hunt. Had she found one she would have paralyzed it with quick sting to the back of the spider's head. It's not a poisonous sting, like that of a bee, but more like a quick dagger thrust to the nerve bundle that controls the spider's movement.
Once a spider is paralyzed, she'll take it back to her mud nest, lay an egg on it and an encase it in mud. In a week or two, the egg hatches and devours the still living spider.
I've always liked the elegant look of the thread-like waist on these wasps--the first pic shows it off pretty well.
The Grapeleaf Skeletonizer is a type of moth, redily identified by the orange head.

Notes: Soldier Beetles and Lightning Bugs both belong to the Coleoptera superfamily Cantharoidea. The difference between them is that one can see a soldier beetle's head when viewing them from above. The heads of Lightning Bugs are hidden by a shield

Afternoon Flora And Fauna

Notes:
Caught the Forester Moth in a bed of mint. An incredible shot closeup of one can be seen here--http://www.richard-seaman.com/Wallpaper/Nature/Moths/EightSpottedForesterMoth.jpg
The Japanese beetles showed up en masse today. I went to the hardware store for traps right after this.
