Front Yard Shower

Shower I
Shower II
It's Raining!
Notes: Ngnat was already soaked from playing with the hose by the time I asked if she wanted to take a shower outside. I'd done much the same thing when I was her age, though we didn't haven't fancy watering attachments when I was a kid. We had to take our outside showers in a thunderstorm

Morning Critters

Bumblebee on Butterfly Bush
Spined Micrathena
Damselfly - Probably a female Attenuated Bluet
Notes: The Spined Micrathena, yes, that's its common name--(latin is Micrathena gracilis) is a orb weaver that makes its living by imitating a lump of bird turd.

Bird turd, as one may recall from the last time one was bespattered by an avian bombadier, is black, white, and wet. Many an insect species happen to crave nothing more than a nice sip of fresh bird poo,so when they spot a micrathena in the forest, they flit over in search of a nice repast, only to become entangled in her circular web and dined on themselves. When I was a nature counselor, lo these many years ago, I described the body shape of M.gracilis to the kids as the Beverly Hillbillies jalopy with spikes. It seemed an accurate metaphor.

I had a great deal of trouble getting the camera to focus in on the spider while she was perched on the web--hence the hand held shot. A more natural, and much larger, image of the species can be seen here
